Salt and shadows

Every summer, I stayed at my grandmother’s ranch—a dry, lonely stretch of land where animals roamed but horses were curiously absent. I loved horses, but my grandmother always insisted they were too much trouble. Still, every night I heard one neighing from a house surrounded by an unnatural cluster of trees far from the rest of the ranch. My grandmother warned me to stay away, saying the woman who lived there wasn’t right, but I didn’t understand—until the night I disobeyed.

That night, the neighing was louder, closer. I felt something pulling me toward it. Slipping out of bed, I crossed the plain barefoot, drawn to the glowing light in the distant house. In the moonlight, I saw it: the most beautiful horse I had ever seen. Its coat shimmered, its mane moved without wind. But then, it began to convulse, and with a wet, awful sound, it vomited a gelatinous mass onto the ground. The stench was horrific. Shaken, I ran back home.

The next day in the village, I overheard an old man speaking of the woman in the house. “Cursed,” he said. “She changes at night. Leaves something behind.” When I told him what I had seen, he listened carefully and simply said, “Salt. It draws out the truth.”

That night, I returned with a jar of salt. The horse stood there again. I watched as it expelled the same awful mass. Trembling, I stepped forward and threw salt over it. Then I hid. The horse returned, tried to eat the mass, but recoiled each time it touched the salted ground. Panic set in. It tried again and again, each time more frantic, more desperate.

Then, just before dawn, the horse stopped. It let out a scream—a human scream. My blood ran cold. I couldn’t move. The sound was full of agony and something deeper—something ancient and lost. As the sun rose, it collapsed. And before it faded, it looked at me with human eyes.

The next day, the house was empty. The woman had vanished. No one ever saw her again.

But even now, every night, I still hear it—the horse’s cry, distant and hollow.

And now, I understand what it truly is.
