The last passanger

I’ve been a taxi driver for nearly ten years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the night changes people. But nothing prepared me for what happened one night on the highway.

I got a request near midnight—a pickup outside a shady bar on the outskirts of town. When I arrived, a tall man dressed in dark clothing was waiting. He slid into the backseat without a word. The app showed no name, just a blank space, and he barely acknowledged me when I asked if he was heading to Pine Hollow.

As we drove, an eerie feeling settled over me. The road was deserted, the darkness pressing in. I kept glancing at the rearview mirror, and that’s when I noticed something chilling—his lips were moving, forming silent words, but no sound came out.

Then, after thirty minutes of silence, he finally spoke. His voice was calm, too calm.

-«Do you drive this road often?»

-«Sometimes,» I answered cautiously.

-«A lot of accidents happen here. You wouldn’t believe what people do when they think no one’s watching.»

Then, after another long pause, he asked, «Have you ever hit someone?»

His tone was unnervingly casual. I laughed nervously, denying it, but he kept staring at me in the mirror, as if searching for something.

Then, the app chimed—Destination updated.

The new drop-off was nowhere near Pine Hollow. It led to a remote dirt road in the middle of nowhere.

Something wasn’t right.

As I debated what to do, I saw something up ahead—a wrecked car on the side of the road. The windshield was shattered, the hood crumpled. And next to it, barely illuminated by my headlights, was a woman’s body.

My passenger murmured, «Some people don’t stop.»

That was it. I slammed the brakes, my heart pounding. I turned to confront him—

But the backseat was empty.

The door hadn’t opened. There was no sound, no movement. He was just… gone.

The only proof he had ever been there was the updated destination still blinking on my screen. And the wrecked car. And the woman.

I didn’t stop. I sped away, not slowing down until I reached town, surrounded by streetlights and life.

When I checked the app again, the ride was gone. No history, no record.

But I knew.

Somewhere out there, on that dark, empty road, someone was waiting.

And the next driver might not stop either.
